About the Player
The short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: “Sir, you are the greatest athlete in the world,” King Gustav told Jim Thorpe at the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden, after Jim won the pentathlon and decathlon. Jim is the grandson of the Chippewa warrior Black Hawk. Jim attended the Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania, where Football coach Glenn “Pop” Warner groomed him in football and other sports. Jim was selected as an All-American in football in ’11 and ’12. In ’13, Jim signed a three-year contract with the New York Giants for a princely sum of $6000 per year.
About the Series
In this series Helmar brings the same high quality to athletes that have mastered sports other than baseball. The paintings are once more accomplished using opaque watercolors. The process involves layering thousands of tiny dots of color to achieve the desired result. This series is limited to 20, each print is hand numbered. The size is 8' x 7', constructed of three layers for just the right hand feel and stiffness. Included as part of this series are athlete versions of 2.5' dexterity hand puzzles. Each puzzle may come with one of seven comic backs. 27 of each puzzle were made.
