About the Player
A short bio from the Boston Garter Game of the Century card back: Connie Mack plans to start his own Lefty Grove in the box when the American League’s best take on their NL counterparts in the Game of the Century in July. This is not good news for the Nationals, as Grove is simply the best pitcher in the game. Lefty has won 20 games 6 seasons in a row and has led the league in ERA 5 times and in strikeouts 7 times. He was practically unhittable in 1931 when he won 31 games. He only lost 4 games that year and 3 of t hose were due to errors. It was Grove’s powerful arm that swept the Athletics to 3 straight pennants, 1929-31.
About the Series
Helmar's Boston Garter tradition of strikingly original artwork takes a giant leap forward in this celebration of the first All-Star game, known at the time as the 'Game of the Century'. Thirty-six players and both managers appear in the joyful Art Deco style that defined the period. For the first time we are hand numbering each card. Just twenty sets are printed and numbered plus four sets of artist's proofs. Each card is 3' x 5'.
