About the Player
A short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: Elmer burns brightly for the Naps. Fleet-footed, and sharp-eyed, he often lathes his own bats as he led the American League in hitting in 1905, posting a mark of .308. In 1906, he ranked fourth while hitting .311. In the spring of 1907, Detroit field general Hughie Jennings offered to trade talented and irascible “Ty” Cobb to Cleveland in return for upstanding Elmer. Cleveland president Charles Somers refused the offer. Elmer has three times led the league in triples, twice in stolen bases, and once in runs scored. Elmer is 5’9” and 166 pounds. He bats left and throws right. Stomach ailments have limited Elmer’s playing time recently.
