About the Player
A short bio from the Boston Garter Game of the Century card back: Pittsburgh’s Paul Waner is a little man with a big stick. In the league for 7 years he has not batted lower than .322. He has collected more than 200 hits in a season 5 times and he totaled 237 safeties in 1927 when he won the NL batting title with an average of .380. Standing only 5’8” and weighing a mere 153 pounds, the left-handed Waner does not homer often but strikes the ball with authority and racks up ringing doubles and triples in bunches. His reserve status is an indication of the strength of the NL lineup that will take the field on July 6 in Chicago’s Century of Progress game. Waner’s younger brother Lloyd is also a star outfielder for the Pirates.
About the Series
Seven layers make up a Helmar Oasis card. Each layer has to fit perfectly. It takes a long time to construct each card, then scuff it to make it seem well-worn; it's already well-loved, by us. Oasis is designed to evoke the Gaslight Style, a name applied to commercial trade signs of the 1870's through 1890's, in an era that succumbed to electric light. The essence of Helmar Oasis is depth. The pictures of the players arise in a shadowy light, to seem like they're almost emerging from another plane of existence. Each card is about 2.65' x 4'.
