About the Player
A short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: Samuel Earl Crawford was born in Wahoo, Nebraska, on April 18, 1880, hence the moniker that his teammates like to use: “Wahoo Sam.” 1899 is a year that Sam will remember well. Cincinnati in the senior circuit called him up to join the big time. He’s best known as a Detroiter now, having roamed Navin Field’s green pastures with Cobb for some time. He loves to hit triples, in his first year with Detroit he smacked 25 and led the league. Wahoo Sam is a full 6 feet tall and weighs 190 lbs.
About the Series
Seven layers make up a Helmar Oasis card. Each layer has to fit perfectly. It takes a long time to construct each card, then scuff it to make it seem well-worn; it's already well-loved, by us. Oasis is designed to evoke the Gaslight Style, a name applied to commercial trade signs of the 1870's through 1890's, in an era that succumbed to electric light. The essence of Helmar Oasis is depth. The pictures of the players arise in a shadowy light, to seem like they're almost emerging from another plane of existence. Each card is about 2.65' x 4'. Gouache paintings by J. Scott Pedely.
