About the Player
The short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: If it seems that “Dutch” has been around forever, it is because he has. He started his career back in 1930 with the Canton Terriers of the Central League. By 1933 he had clawed his way up to the big leagues with the Brooklyn club. He first made a name for himself the following year by going 14-11. Like the knuckleball that he’s mastered, he has sort of floated around the league ever since. His best year so far was in 1939 when he won 20 against 8 for Washington. But the next year he dropped 19. In Chicago he’s getting lots of work in the middle innings and still confusing hitters with the knuckler. He says the pitch is easy on the arm and that is why he likes it.
About the Series
Seven layers make up a Helmar Oasis card. Each layer has to fit perfectly. It takes a long time to construct each card, then scuff it to make it seem well-worn; it's already well-loved, by us. Oasis is designed to evoke the Gaslight Style, a name applied to commercial trade signs of the 1870's through 1890's, in an era that succumbed to electric light. The essence of Helmar Oasis is depth. The pictures of the players arise in a shadowy light, to seem like they're almost emerging from another plane of existence. Each card is about 2.65' x 4'.
