About the Player
The short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: The first thing you notice about Jackie is his blazing speed, unusual for a man that weighs 195 pounds. He’s also quick in the field, whether he’s playing second, third, or first base. He started with the Kansas City Monarchs for two seasons before signing with the Montreal Royals for the 1946 campaign. It was a rip-roaring year, and Jackie batted .349 with 40 stolen bases. The rise to the Dodgers and fast company the following year did little to slow him down. In fact, he was the difference that enabled Brooklyn to take the crown. In 1949 he batted .342 and swiped 37 bases, with the team taking honors once more.
About the Series
Seven layers make up a Helmar Oasis card. Each layer has to fit perfectly. It takes a long time to construct each card, then scuff it to make it seem well-worn; it's already well-loved, by us. Oasis is designed to evoke the Gaslight Style, a name applied to commercial trade signs of the 1870's through 1890's, in an era that succumbed to electric light. The essence of Helmar Oasis is depth. The pictures of the players arise in a shadowy light, to seem like they're almost emerging from another plane of existence. Each card is about 2.65" x 4". Gouache paintings by J. Scott Pedely.
