About the Player
The short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: Sandy has shocked the world recently with the announcement that he is retiring. Many fans do not believe that he is gone from the mound forever, the thought being that he is either posturing for a bigger salary or is perhaps just taking a season off. His most recent campaign could not have been a bigger success--he compiled a 27-9 record while also leading the big leagues in strikeouts (317), innings pitched (323) and Earned Run Average (1.73). It took every bit of this heroic effort to nip the Giants by a game and a half in the regular season. In the World Series against Baltimore he started one game but took the loss.
