About the Player
A short bio from the Helmar “This Great Game” card back: Scouts don’t usually find gold in the hills of North Dakota, but Roger Maris has proved to be a valuable commodity so far in his big league career. Growing up in Fargo, Roger was a standout athlete in high school, not only in baseball. Once, in a big football game against a rival school, Maris returned four kickoffs for touchdowns, a national record that still stands. Maris was lured to the University of Oklahoma by a football scholarship, but quickly realized baseball was a better occupation and left college to pursue his professional career. The Indians signed him and within three years the lefthanded pull hitter helped Indianapolis to the Junior World Series title, on his way to the majors.
