About the Player
A short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: This big fellow is feared around baseball because of both his bat and his big fists. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1902, Big John stands 6 feet and 3 inches tall, weighing in at 220 pounds. In the past he’s played catcher and shortstop but for some time now has felt more comfortable at the third sack. No one in the Negro Leagues can hit a ball harder or further. He has also hit for very high averages including a .419 mark in 1921 with the American Giants. Known as a difficult man, his reputation has kept him moving from team to team throughout his career. This year finds him with the Palmer House Indians who hope to put him to good use.
About the Series
Seven layers make up a Helmar Oasis card. Each layer has to fit perfectly. It takes a long time to construct each card, then scuff it to make it seem well-worn; it's already well-loved, by us. Oasis is designed to evoke the Gaslight Style, a name applied to commercial trade signs of the 1870's through 1890's, in an era that succumbed to electric light. The essence of Helmar Oasis is depth. The pictures of the players arise in a shadowy light, to seem like they're almost emerging from another plane of existence. Each card is about 2.65' x 4'.
