About the Player

The short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: “Smoky Joe” rose to the top rank of pitchers with the Boston Red Sox, winning 23 games against 17 losses in 1911. In 1912 he led the league in wins and shutouts, racking 34 of the former and 10 of the latter, against only 5 losses. Joe’s arm failed him towards the end of 1915. He shied away from the major leagues in 1916, but refused to quit, turning himself into an outfielder, and was sold to Cleveland. He hit .296 in 1918, helped the team to the championship in 1920, and had a career-best year in ’21, hitting .366. He throws and hits from the right side, stands nearly 6’ tall, and weighs 180 pounds.
