About the Player
Ty Cobb says: “One of the gamest exhibitions at first base I ever saw was the work of George Wiltse for the Giants during the 1913 world's series with the Athletics. After Merkle was hurt, Wiltse went in there with only the little experience he had gained from covering the bag in odd moments of preliminary practice, and made a great showing. He displayed more gameness than any other member of the New York club be sides Mathewson and McLean. When the Giants took the ten-inning game from Plank, Wiltse, next to Mathewson, deserved the most credit for the victory.”
