About the Player
A short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: When Mr. Mack really needs to win a big game he hands the ball to “Chief”. Not only is Bender a wonderful pitcher but he knows what it takes to win. Began his career in 1903 and was a star from the start, winning 17 games while still only 19 years old. In 1905 he and Mr. Mack won the American League crown, with Chief winning 18. After a couple close runs at it, they won the pennant again in 1910. Born in 1884 in Crow Wing County, Wisconsin. Attended the Carlisle Indian industrial School near Philly and also attended Dickinson college in the same area. He is a tall one at 6 feet and 2 inches and weighs in at 185 pounds.
