About the Player
Theodore Amar Lyons was born on December 28, 1900 in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Ted attended Baylor University, aiming for a career in law, but his college pitching made the righthander a much sought-after prospect. In 1923, the Chicago White Sox held spring training near the campus of Baylor University in Seguin, Texas. Lyons showed up for a tryout and impressed the White Sox management enough that they offered him a $1,000 bonus and a $300 monthly salary. A happy Lyons signed and agreed to report to the White Sox upon his graduation at Baylor. After graduation Ted skipped the minor leagues and immediately joined the White Sox on July 2, 1923 for a game in St. Louis. That first day with the White Sox Lyons pitched in relief, retiring all three St. Louis Browns batters he faced. Lyons recorded his first 2 big league wins pitching relief in a doubleheader on October 6, 1923, making him one of the first pitchers to perform the feat. In 1924, Lyons eventually made it into the White Sox rotation going a modest 12-11 while starting 22 games and relieving in 19 others, along with a 4.87 ERA.

Rough and tumble early 20th century players spring to life in our third series of Helmar Cabinets. We’ve selected some of our favorite historic photos and have artfully colorized the player figures and set them against original backgrounds that evoke the magnificent style of the period. True to the period, the player images are separate and have been pasted to a colorful, ripple-edged scene of a ballpark. Collect this series and you’ll understand why Helmar is called “The Flavor of the Game”. Note: #42-53 have a population of up to 25. All others were limited to 20.
