About the Player
The short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: “Rebel” has played five seasons in the big leagues and has been a regular centerfielder in each. Last year his batting average improved to .293 and he hopes to drive it even higher during the upcoming 1914 season. He is a very swift runner, both on the basepaths and while patroling the outfield. He loves to turn his back to the infield and track down balls that are hit over his head. Oakes was born in Lisbon, Louisiana, on December 17, 1883. He weighs 170 pounds and is 5’11” tall.
About the Series
Seven layers make up a Helmar Oasis card. Each layer has to fit perfectly. It takes a long time to construct each card, then scuff it to make it seem well-worn; it's already well-loved, by us. Oasis is designed to evoke the Gaslight Style, a name applied to commercial trade signs of the 1870's through 1890's, in an era that succumbed to electric light. The essence of Helmar Oasis is depth. The pictures of the players arise in a shadowy light, to seem like they're almost emerging from another plane of existence. Each card is about 2.65" x 4". Gouache paintings by J. Scott Pedely.
