About the Player
The short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: “Swede” finds himself in a serious pickle, having been banned for life in the recent scandal. It appears that Chick Gandil and Swede were the main conspirators among the eight White Sox players who “threw” the World Series to the Reds in 1919. Swede was a solid shortstop for the White Sox, contributing to the team that won the ’17 World Series against the Giants. Swede bats and throws from the right side, is 6’0” and 175 pounds. He now plays semi-pro ball.
About the Series
Seven layers make up a Helmar Oasis card. Each layer has to fit perfectly. It takes a long time to construct each card, then scuff it to make it seem well-worn; it's already well-loved, by us. Oasis is designed to evoke the Gaslight Style, a name applied to commercial trade signs of the 1870's through 1890's, in an era that succumbed to electric light. The essence of Helmar Oasis is depth. The pictures of the players arise in a shadowy light, to seem like they're almost emerging from another plane of existence. Each card is about 2.65" x 4". Gouache paintings by J. Scott Pedely.
