About the Player
A short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: The word that comes to mind when thinking of “Campy” is “solid”. Behind the plate he is like an unmovable boulder; pity the poor base runner that needs to get past. As a batsman is superb; his strong arms and wrists can whistle a seed over far away fences regularly. Something about this man anchors a team, bringing out the best through the hot months. In his first year as a regular, 1949, Brooklyn navigated all the way into the World Series. Campy was born in Philadelphia, the Freedom City, on November 19, 1921. He’s grown to 5 feet 9 inches and weighs 190 pounds. He hits and throws right handed all the time.
About the Series
Seven layers make up a Helmar Oasis card. Each layer has to fit perfectly. It takes a long time to construct each card, then scuff it to make it seem well-worn; it's already well-loved, by us. Oasis is designed to evoke the Gaslight Style, a name applied to commercial trade signs of the 1870's through 1890's, in an era that succumbed to electric light. The essence of Helmar Oasis is depth. The pictures of the players arise in a shadowy light, to seem like they're almost emerging from another plane of existence. Each card is about 2.65" x 4". Gouache paintings by J. Scott Pedely.
