About the Player
The short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: “Muddy” dons the “tools of ignorance” as catcher for the Washington Senators. Though slight at 150 pounds, he does not let his size stop him. He has led American League catchers in putouts, assists, double plays, and fielding three times. He was field general for the Senators when they won the World Series in 1924. He averaged .316 in 1923, and .310 in ’25. Before the Senators, Muddy played for the Yankees. In 1920 he was behind the plate, the closest man to Ray Chapman when Carl Mays’ submarine pitch cracked Chapman’s head. Muddy stands 5’8”, bats and throws from the right side.
About the Series
Seven layers make up a Helmar Oasis card. Each layer has to fit perfectly. It takes a long time to construct each card, then scuff it to make it seem well-worn; it's already well-loved, by us. Oasis is designed to evoke the Gaslight Style, a name applied to commercial trade signs of the 1870's through 1890's, in an era that succumbed to electric light. The essence of Helmar Oasis is depth. The pictures of the players arise in a shadowy light, to seem like they're almost emerging from another plane of existence. Each card is about 2.65" x 4". Gouache paintings by J. Scott Pedely.
