From a painting by J. Scott Pedley
About the Player
Born as Ted Roosevelt Radcliffe but known to all as “Double Duty”, Radcliffe was born on July 7, 1902 in Mobile, Alabama. He grew up playing ball with the likes of Satchel Paige and Bobbie Robinson, along with the fathers of both Hank Aaron and Billy Williams. At the time Alabama may have been the greatest producer of baseball talent in the country, especially for the Negro Leagues.
About the Series
Seven layers make up a Helmar Oasis card. Each layer has to fit perfectly. It takes a long time to construct each card, then scuff it to make it seem well-worn; it's already well-loved, by us. Oasis is designed to evoke the Gaslight Style, a name applied to commercial trade signs of the 1870's through 1890's, in an era that succumbed to electric light. The essence of Helmar Oasis is depth. The pictures of the players arise in a shadowy light, to seem like they're almost emerging from another plane of existence. Each card is about 2.65" x 4". Gouache paintings by J. Scott Pedely.
