About the Player
A short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: This hard-driving backstop knows how to push his team to be their very best. With the Philadelphia Athletics he prodded them to three appearances in the World Series. Excellent fielder with a bullet throw to second base. Eight of nine seasons with Philly he batted .290 or better, his high mark being .357 in 1930. Won the Most Valuable Player Award in 1928, largely due to his intense play rather than his batting statistics that year. Started playing in 1923 with the Dover, Delaware, Senators. Batted .322 for them. Next season played with the Portland Beavers in the Pacific Coast League, batting .333. Those high averages were a sign of good things to come.
About the Series
The glory of 19th century design is revisited in this series by your friends at Helmar. We've kept the look of the early line drawings but improved them so that the players are recognizable. Yet again, all the artwork is original to Helmar and printed in stunning color. We've chosen a beautiful paper with a soft hand that tested best for the subtle color transitions. Each card is about 3" x 5".
