About the Player

From the "This Great Game" card back: In many ways, Score was always trying to slip from beneath the shadow of Bob Feller. In his fourth big league start, Score pitched the second game of a twinbill, moments after Feller had spun a one-hitter. Score didn’t wilt: he fanned 16 batters, falling two shy of Rapid Robert’s team record. The 22-year old southpaw won 16 games and led the league with 245 strikeouts as a rookie. He won 20 games and struck out a league-high 263 the next season. But Herb’s fortunes were altered in May of 1957 when a line drive struck him in the right eye. He won 17 games after the gruesome injury and was out of the game before the age of 30.
