About the Player
A short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: Rube is one of baseball’s greatest players and organizers. As a pitcher he averaged over 50 wins a season from 1902-1910, playing against teams ranging from semi-pro to major league. In 1911, Rube organized the Chicago American Giants, who featured a scrappy game. In 1920, he was the force behind the Negro National League. In 1924, he promoted the Negro League World Series, between the NNL and the Eastern Colored League. Medical concerns have recently forced “Rube” to step away from the game.
