About the Player
Lloyd began his professional career in 1905 with the Cuban X-Giants as a catcher. By 1907, “Pop” was playing shortstop and batting cleanup. Over the next decade he played for whatever team could afford to pay him best, usually in the Philadelphia, New York and New Jersey areas. By 1914 he found himself in Chicago with Rube Foster's Chicago American Giants. Lloyd led the Giants to championships that year and in 1917. Continuing his traveling ways, Lloyd skipped from one team to another until the Hilldale Daisies called in 1922. In 1923 the Eastern Colored League was organized and Lloyd, serving as the Daisies player-manager, hit .418 to lead his team to the league's inaugural pennant. Leading sportswriters of the day often referred to Lloyd as the "Black Honus Wagner". When the real Wagner heard about the comparison he replied that he considered it a privilege to be compared to Lloyd. Elected to Baseball's Hall of Fame in 1977.
