About the Player
A short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: Curve ball pitcher. Tommy may hold one of the smallest frames in baseball but his curve could bring down the likes of many a slugger. No day has proved more prophetic than on August 5, 1932. Tommy threw a near perfect game, losing it with 2 outs in the ninth. Last season, a home run by the Senators Joe Kuhel was the only hit Tommy allowed. Never in American League history had a home run been the sole hit in a ball game. Tommy began his career in the Middle Atlantic League before moving on to the 3 I League. The Tigers secured Tommy in 1930 and he has steadily improved ever since. His 4 shutouts in 1932 was a league record.
