About the Player
John J. McGraw says “A famous pitcher with whom we had great difficulty at first was Rube Marquard. Apparently he had everything. In the American Association he was almost unbeatable. It was on that record that we paid $11,000 for him. I still think that the immense amount of publicity following that deal in which Rube got the sobriquet of the “Eleven thousand dollar beauty” interfered a lot with his progress. I don’t mean to say that Marquard was swell-headed. He was anything but that. It was nervousness over living up to a great reputation that seemed to upset him.”
About the Series
The Helmar H813-4 Boston Garter series consists of 45 cards, and the design was inspired by one of the most beautiful baseball card sets of all time, the 1912 Boston Garters. The originals showed the sock garters; the Helmar versions instead show interesting scenes in the background or period detail such as a 1912-era telephone. Each card is large at 8.5" x 4.25" and gorgeous. Produced in 2014. In the fall of 2021 the series was extended with a round, 2.5" dexterity hand puzzle made to match each earlier card in the series. Each hand puzzle consitutes a game piece that includes three dice with outcomes detailed on the puzzle's backs. Two new players were introduced within the series extension, #47 (Lazzeri) and #81 (Cravath). Additionally, the last two puzzles feature John McGraw in multi-player illustrations. The back of #83 features a checklist.
