About the Player
Affectionately known as the "Schnoz", Lombardi was a tremendous hitter with a lifetime batting average of .306. Lombardi was so slow afoot that infielders quite often played back on the outfield grass, stopping many a screeching line drive that would normally been hits. Many experts believe that with even average footspeed Ernie would have had hit 50 points higher. Lombardi was 6'3" and 230 lbs., with paws so huge that he could easily palm 7 baseballs in his right hand. He was elected posthumously to Baseball's Hall of Fame in 1986, nearly nine years after his death.
About the Series
Rough and tumble early 20th century players spring to life in our third series of Helmar Cabinets. We’ve selected some of our favorite historic photos and have artfully colorized the player figures and set them against original backgrounds that evoke the magnificent style of the period. True to the period, the player images are separate and have been pasted to a colorful, ripple-edged scene of a ballpark. Collect this series and you’ll understand why Helmar is called “The Flavor of the Game”. Note: #42-53 have a population of 23. All others were limited to 20.
