There are a variety of Helmar cabinet series but they are all follow the the old-fashioned construction method of gluing a separate image on top of a pre-made, printed backboard. This method appeared with the first commercial photographers in the 19th century and had largely disappeared by early in the following century. The backboards may be colorful or staid; straight or ripple-edged. The images themselves range from faithfully colored and enhanced photographs to art deco stylistic portraiture. Often the images become a blend of both worlds.
