About the Player
From the Helmar-R319 card back: “Luke” is nearing the end of his 20-season career, and piling up franchise records. Despite constant griping about ailments, “Old Aches and Pains” has set the American League shortstop record for games played, assists, putouts, and chances. In 1936, his pinnacle year at the plate, “Luke” hit .388, and drove in 128 runs. He’s a .310 lifetime hitter, with legendary bat control, striking out an average of 36 times per season. After a front-office tightwad wouldn’t let “Luke” have some baseballs to give to fans, when “Luke” got up to bat he fouled off a dozen balls in a row into the stands, then turned towards the White Sox employee and shouted, “How do you like that?”
About the Series
Helmar Imperial Cabinets are mammoth. Each is about the size of a sheet of paper. They are thick, sturdy, and beautiful. There are two series in this set; series one measures 8.25" x 10.875", while series two is a shade smaller. The second series features a multi-colored border. The art was produced using a variety of methods. Each card takes a long time to assemble, to scrape, rub, treat, and transform, so it seems that you are holding a huge, overwhelmingly-beautiful card from the turn of the last century.
