About the Player

Ty Cobb says: “For a long time Fred Merkle of the Giants was a voracious reader, and in the winters he used to sit up until late in the night studying the fine print of the law books. This was his hobby. I have heard McGraw make the statement that by using his eyes so constantly Merkle had hurt his hitting.”

About the Series

Seven layers make up a Helmar Oasis card. Each layer has to fit perfectly. It takes a long time to construct each card, then scuff it to make it seem well-worn; it's already well-loved, by us. Oasis is designed to evoke the Gaslight Style, a name applied to commercial trade signs of the 1870's through 1890's, in an era that succumbed to electric light. The essence of Helmar Oasis is depth. The pictures of the players arise in a shadowy light, to seem like they're almost emerging from another plane of existence. Each card is about 2.65' x 4'. Gouache paintings by J. Scott Pedely.
