About the Player

Ty Cobb says: 'Nig' Clarke, of the old Clevelands, used to pull one that bothered me a good deal when I was first in the league. After giving his sign, he would reach down and grab up a handful of dirt as if to dry the sweat off his hands. Then, just when the ball came up to the plate, he would throw this dirt on the batter's feet. The action naturally distracted a man's attention and took his mind off the pitch. In other words, Clarke was working on the batter's nerves. There can be no success in batting without concentration
