By 1914 Indianapolis, the population of which was on the way to tripling (reaching 315,000 from 1890 to 1920), seemed a natural host for the growing game of baseball and the new Federal League. While the team, called the Hoosiers or "HoosFeds", was successful enough to win the first league championship they were not successful enough at the gate to remain in the city. The next year they were moved to Newark and were known as the Peppers. Black Baseball established a local team, the ABC's, in 1913.
