Few people, even Detroiters, know the story of the Detroit Wolves. The Negro National League folded in 1931, a victim of the Great Depression. The well-loved Detroit Stars team folded with the league. The following year Cum Posey, of Pittsburgh fame, sensing opportunity in the Motor City, founded the Wolves and entered them in the new East-West League. Few teams of any color have had more talent. The Wolves could boast of a lineup that included "Cool Papa" Bell, Willie Wells, "Smokey" Joe Williams, Ray Brown, Mule Suttles and Quincy Trouppe. Unfortunately the league folded part way into the season with the Wolves in first place. Their record at the time was 29-13. In the Helmar T206 series one lone Wolf is available, Quincy Trouppe (#468).
